Microcomms has provided Falmouth Town Council with extensive Fibre works to get the system back up and running just in time for summer festivities! Falmouth is located on the south coast of Cornwall, and each summer this delightful town evolves into a bustling metropolis. Falmouth Tall Ships is one event you do not want to miss. On Friday 18th August, and in the days leading up to it, the ocean surrounding Falmouth will be inundated with Tall Ships readying themselves for the Magellan – Elcano Race of 2023. You can book tickets for a self-guided tour on some of the ships, then gather on the coast to watch the Tall Ships Parade on the Friday before the fleet head out to sea for the start of the race.
Each June, Falmouth also hosts the famous International Sea Shanty Festival, with a mission to keep the history of the sea alive. By bringing together shanty bands from across the UK, Spain, Holland, Canada and Ireland to name a few, this seaside town spreads to songs of seafarers like the days of old. Also in June is the National Armed Forces Day. A proud day for Cornwall given our rich Naval history, thousands gather on the streets of Falmouth to celebrate and support the men and women who make up the Armed Forces, and all that it entails.
The middle of summer also brings to life Falmouth Week. Whilst its origins hail from being a local sailing regatta, it has evolved over the years into a week filled with music, food, drink and entertainment. This year, held between Friday 4th and Sunday 13th August, you can expect to see a 40-foot Victorian carousel, a buzzing marketplace, an 80’s night and a 00’s night, not to mention RNLI Fun Day. A week that must not be missed!
This year, the team at Microcomms have provided Fibre repair works for Falmouth Town Council ahead of this busy calendar of events. With collaboration from Enerveo (previously SSE), Reach Access, Falmouth Town Council and our own experts, we have been able to repair and maintain the infrastructure required for Armed Forces Day, and the Sea Shanty Festival – two major events that require an enormous amount of preparation when it comes to connectivity and security.
The Fibre that runs through the town of Falmouth was originally supplied and terminated by Microcomms whilst working for Enerveo (formerly SSE), who is the company that manages the contract for the town cameras. When they noticed that the Fibre had been damaged, our team of experts were brought in once more to assess the issue and advise on how best to solve it. Once our team arrived on site, they walked the length of the Fibre, light-testing as they went, which determined the irreparable damage that the Fibre had sustained. Our findings concluded that the Fibre must be replaced as soon as possible, especially ahead of the summer festivities, to ensure the safety and security of the public.
Once the diagnosis was agreed upon, Enerveo introduced Microcomms to Falmouth Town Council, allowing Microcomms to work directly with the council to assist in delivering a solution. By supplying the Council with OS2 Fibre (Fibre Cable Corrugated Steel Tape 8 Fibre OS2), they were able to pass this over to Reach Access, who then installed it over three working-nights. Once completed, Microcomms terminated the ends of the Fibre into the junction boxes, allowing Enerveo to re-patch the town cameras and restore them to full working order.
Working efficiently and diligently, Microcomms were able to provide successful Fibre works, even with a strict end-date. Ensuring the system came back online for Armed Forces Day, the Sea Shanty Festival, and all events to follow, meant that Falmouth Town Council could once again get the town back online and ready for a bustling summer.
