We are delighted to have embraced Socktober, an easy and fun way to help the homeless in our community. By wearing odd socks on 24 October 2016 and giving a donation, Microcomms staff have raised funds for St Petroc’s Society – a charity that helps single homeless people in Cornwall.
Homelessness is a serious issue and Cornwall has the fifth highest number of rough sleepers in the UK. Homeless people often suffer from the consequences of poor or no footwear.
The single homeless are those who, more often than not, fall outside the responsibility of statutory authorities. Very often they are sleeping rough and may have a range of difficulties or lifestyle which contributes to their homelessness and social exclusion.
St Petroc’s Society provides a diverse range of services for this particular group. Their houses across Cornwall provide safe environments for 50 individuals to have a place they can call home. In Truro and Penzance, their Resettlement Centres offer services including showers, toilets, food, clothing, bedding, laundry facilities and GP surgeries.
They provide support to enable individuals to access a variety of accommodation and specialist support services. Their Assertive Street Outreach Team aims to reduce rough sleeping, assist those with multiple issues in gaining the support they need, to contribute to community safety partnerships and help people to adopt a less harmful lifestyle.
Their aim is to help all clients progress towards living independently. To donate, please visit https://localgiving.org/stpetrocs
